Nathan Miles Shishido died on January 6, 2022, in Fortuna, at the age of 71 years.
Nathan was born on March 13, 1950, to Miles and Florence Shishido, in the town of Ola’a, on the Big Island of Hawaii. As the eldest of three sons, he was the older brother to Neil and Nolan Shishido. Nathan was predominantly raised in Hawaii and Oregon. He attended college at University of Oregon, and medical school at Oregon Health and Science University. He worked as an orthopedic surgeon for the U.S. Army in the United States and in Germany, before joining Humboldt Orthopaedic Associates in Eureka in 1988. Nathan passionately served the local medical community as a general orthopedic surgeon for over 20 years. He also served in medical outreach missions in Bhutan and Haiti prior to retirement.
Nathan loved being active and in nature. He had many adventures with his friends and family through kayaking, backpacking, fly-fishing, cycling on trails and country roads, and bird watching. He enjoyed gardening and cooking delicious food with his harvests. He also cherished playing chess, reading, and spending time with his wife and their dogs.
Nathan had many connections with others that were built through his work and his passion for the outdoors. He will always be appreciated and missed by those in the community whose lives he touched.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife Michele Harrison, his brother Nolan Shishido and his three daughters Sonia Shishido, Robin Shishido, and Katie Shishido from his marriage to Veronika Shishido. Nathan will also be dearly missed by his Kuwasaki cousins and the extended Shishido family.
