The Caltrans Quickmap is currently reporting that Highway 299 is closed between Blue Lake and Willow Creek as a crash on that stretch is being investigated.

Check the map below: If there’s no big red STOP sign in the center of it, then Caltrans is reporting the road open again.

From the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page:

At approximately 3pm the Sheriff’s Office was notified of an Armed Robbery/Assault outside of the Bayshore Mall involving three suspects. One person was injured as a result of this assault. The suspects fled prior to law enforcement arrival.

Sheriff’s deputies located the suspect vehicle in the Cutten area and began a pursuit. At the intersection of Harris and Dolbeer Streets the suspect vehicle was involved in a traffic collision and an officer involved shooting occurred. Two suspects sustained gunshot related injuries and were transported to a local hospital in unknown condition. At least two additional parties sustained injuries and are in unknown condition. No deputies were reported injured.

One involved person is believed to be outstanding at this time and is wanted by law enforcement for questioning. The suspect is described as a heavy-set light skinned male, approximately 6 feet tall, with short hair, blue jeans and a dark sweater. The man may be associated with a white Toyota Tundra.

Harris/Dolbeer is closed and law enforcement will remain in this area investigating for some time. Please use an alternative route. Parents of children at Washington Elementary and Teachers Pet Preschool should contact the schools directly for student pick up instructions.

About half an hour separated police being notified about the incident at the Bayshore Mall — see below — and the shooting at Harris and Dolbeer. About halfway between those incidents, a red pickup truck that matched the description of the vehicle was involved in a hit-and-run collision near Washington Street and Summer on Eureka’s West Side, according to scanner traffic.

Going Down @ 4:26 p.m.

It’s worth noting that although the police have issued no information on the subject of the incident at Harris and Dolbeer — which is, still, ongoing — they radio traffic is no longer on “code 33,” or emergency status.

North Coast News went live at the scene a few minutes ago:

Going Down @ 4:13 p.m.

From the scanner archives: Witnesses at the Bayshore Mall told police that the two men who attacked a third near the Bayshore Mall “pistol-whipped” their victim before leaving in the red pickup.

Going Down @ 4:09 p.m.

Going back a little further in the scanner archives — it appears that this began about a half an hour before the shooting, when two males associated with a red pickup truck assaulted a person, or possibly multiple people, near the Bayshore Mall before fleeing in the vehicle. It was this truck that police tracked to the Harris and Dolbeer location.

Going Down @ 3:53 p.m.

There’s a massive police presence at the corner of Harris and Dolbeer in Eureka at the moment. That’s down by near the hospital, a block away from Harris’s intersection with Harrison.

According to scanner traffic, two people were shot in the last hour following a confrontation with sheriff’s deputies at that location. Both of the shot people were “suspects,” according to scanner traffic, rather than law enforcement officers.

Scanner traffic indicated that the confrontation followed a traffic collision at that location, which itself was preceded by deputies tracking a suspect vehicle.

The situation is still very much ongoing. Avoid the area. We’ll update when we know more.

Thad Greenson of the North Coast Journal coming in with a hot scoop: In the face of potential $40,000 per day fines, local developer Travis Schneider has agreed to tear down the half-built, dubiously permitted Bayside mansion that became the subject of intense controversy last year.

The story of the mansion rocketed to the forefront of the public conscience in August of last year, when then-Humboldt County Planning Commissioner Alan Bongio used intemperate and frankly racist language to excoriate local tribal concerns about the project. After that, local reporters — notably, Greenson and our own Ryan Burns — dug in and discovered that there was a lot more wrong with the development than even the tribes had objected to.

A dispatcher is now advising deputies on scene that the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital

todd / 1:37 a.m.

The shooting incident was initially dispatched as an unwanted subject that was possibly attempting to force entry into a home. While deputies were responding, it was reported that the individual in the home had shot the individual who was reported to be the unwanted subject. It sounds as though the individuals involved were known to each other. These are unconfirmed, initial reports. Deputies are currently on scene investigating.

todd / 1:21 a.m.

The victim is being transported to the hospital by Arcata Ambulance with firefighters from Arcata Engine 8219 on board to assist. 8219 is out of service and responding to the hospital to retrieve its firefighters

todd / 1:10 a.m.

The jokers at @calpolyhumboldt (unofficial!) sent out a press release on April Fool’s Eve. It read, in part:

President Jackson announced today a bold plan to stand in solidarity with displaced returning students. This move addresses community backlash to a previous announcement of housing policies that prioritized resources for incoming freshmen.

The President’s office on the top floor of Siemens Hall, along with those of his immediate staff, will be converted to temporary housing for returning and transfer students arriving in Fall 2023. The conversion, while largely symbolic, will make available another 14 beds along with a private lounge (with attached sauna) to the limited housing inventory on campus. “It should,” according to President Jackson, “help relieve on the concerns of students and their families about the availability of quality affordable housing in the campus area.”
