11:14 a.m.: #Arcata residents. As you know, we have a huge problem on our hands and sadly, it seems up to the civilians to do something about it. Our plaza has always had its share of shady characters but in the last year, it has gotten out of control. The flower beds are littered with needles, human and dog waste, broken bottles and even a loaded gun that was found by a 5 year old. We have had numerous assaults take place, and the local businesses suffer vandalism and a decrease in foot traffic because the downtown area is over run by addicts. The police refuse to take control in fear of lawsuits that could be slapped on them. I feel there are several things that could be done by law enforcement to make these bums so uncomfortable that they don't want to come back. How about serving them with drunk in public tickets, checking their dog licenses, or even, heaven forbid, posting up on the plaza and patrolling it! It shouldn't be up to gals like me to regulate but sadly it is. I feel like I'm the only person in this town with any balls and I need some back up. There is a public meeting this Friday at noon at the Jambalaya to discuss what we can do. I've found the best solution is to record these shit heads the minute they start posing a threat. I successfully had one bum thrown in jail yesterday and I won't let up until they all are gone. I'm a small town girl and this kind of shit would never fly where I come from. WE CANNOT LET A BUNCH OF WEAK, COWARDLY JUNKIES TAKE OVER OUR BEAUTIFUL PLAZA! Every single department store and fast food chain in Eureka is constantly hiring, there are work opportunities offered all over this community, especially this time of year. There is no reason to be broke in Humboldt. This is the fucking land of opportunity! You just gotta prove your worth and earn people's trust. Take it from someone who moved her broke and barefoot like everyone else. I wanted a life here so I worked my ass off. I built displays at Sears at 4am for minimum wage.
