2:29 p.m.: Southern Torrent Salamander (Rhyacotriton variegatus) in situ. These uniquely specialized salamanders are quickly becoming some of my favorite salamander species! They prefer cold water seeps for habitat, seeking refuge in between and under the rocks in their seep. It's estimated that up to 90% of suitable habitat for them in CA has been lost due to deforestation. This individual was close to adulthood (only small wisps of gill tissues remain) and only an inch and a half long.
