10:30 a.m.: Just got back from an incredible weekend of camping at Gold Bluffs Beach in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Only 5% of the world's old growth redwoods still exist today (how sad!), and more than 95% of them are in CA. A network of parks in Humboldt County called the Redwoods State and National Parks (of which Prairie Creek is a part) protects 45% of California's old growth redwoods. The park system is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve. This is some of the dune habitat on Gold Bluffs beach. Our campsite was right in the dunes!

This office building built by lumber baron William Carson (think Carson Mansion) was the first professional office building in the city. It contained large office space, retail and the 837 seat Ingomar Theater. In 1986, the Northern California Indian Development Council purchased the property with plans for preservation.
