A June jury trial has been set for a McKinleyville man charged with trying to kill a liquor store clerk during a thwarted robbery in March 2016.

Judge Christopher Wilson set a June 5 trial date for Aaron Christopher King, who reportedly walked into a liquor store on Fifth Street in Eureka, aimed a loaded handgun at the clerk and pulled the trigger several times. The gun didn’t fire, and clerk Balwinder Singh Janjua began clobbering King with the cash register till. Then customers arrived, wrestled King to the floor and restrained him until Eureka police arrived. The entire incident was captured on surveillance camera.

King was on supervised probation for felony drug charges when he allegedly attempted the liquor store heist. According to court records, in late February 2016 he admitted to his probation officer that he had used heroin. A probation violation hearing was scheduled, but he didn’t show up. Ten days later he tried to hold up the store.

King, 26, is accused of stealing the firearm during a house burglary earlier the same day. The gun is currently being examined by a forensics lab, at the request of King’s former defense attorney. Today Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer told the judge that the gun owner is irate because his weapon hasn’t been returned and the criminal case is taking so long. Wilson asked new attorney David Celli to look into the gun’s status.

King is charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery, burglary, personal use of a firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted. He remains in Humboldt County Correctional Facility on $1 million bail.
