Caltrans continues work on stabilizing the beleaguered section of Highway 101 just south of Crescent City commonly known as Last Chance Grade. Currently, Caltrans estimates that motorists making the north/south Humboldt/Del Norte trek should expect 25 minute delays while crews attempt to make the route usable for as long as possible.
Fears that the highly trafficked, tourist-bringing section of Highway 101 are one bad storm away from drifting into the Pacific have ramped up in recent months. A couple weeks ago a significant chunk of roadway gave way. How fragile is the route? Check out the vertical video below recorded by an orange warrior in which the mountainside submits to gravity. (That road sign proves sturdy though.)
