TIMBER! The Pine Motel has fallen | Photo: Andrew Goff

As part of plans to add another drive through chain restaurant to Eureka’s “river of money,” the old Pine Motel on Broadway is now almost completely wiped from the earth. Crews could be seen finishing up the nuisance property’s demolition on Monday morning.

As the Outpost previously reported, a new Starbucks and Subway are planned for the location.

Sample what a Pine Motel-less Broadway looks like in the clip below.

Ho! Congrats, once again, to the national champion Cal Poly Humboldt rugby team, who today will do the small-college version of the Golden State Warriors’ trip to the White House with a special ceremony on the floor of the California legislature.

Says the Office of Sen. Mike McGuire:

Senate Majority Leader Mike McGuire couldn’t be more excited to welcome national champions to the Senate floor TODAY in recognition of the Cal Poly Humboldt Men’s rugby team who clinched the 2022 National Collegiate Rugby Championship last December.

The title is the first national championship for the Lumberjacks in the rugby program’s 49-year history.

The recognition ceremony will begin shortly after 2:00pm, once Senate session convenes. The ceremony can be viewed via live streamed here: https://www.senate.ca.gov/

Players, coaches and Cal Poly Humboldt’s President Tom Jackson Jr. will join Senator McGuire for the special ceremony.

Official photos will be issued on Monday afternoon.

A group of about 30 protestors gathered in front of Wildberries Marketplace around 10:30 this morning to call for a boycott of the Arcata grocery store in response to recently leaked security camera footage that shows a prolonged physical struggle between the store’s general manager, Aaron Gottschalk, and teenage girl suspected of shoplifting.

As reported by the Outpost’s Ryan Burns, a video of the September 30 incident was anonymously uploaded to the r/Humboldt subreddit earlier this week. In the time since Gottschalk has received both praise and criticism across social media for his handling of the situation.

In a leaked Jan. 20 letter to staff, Wildberries owner Phil Ricord acknowledged the “rumors and accusations” made by “well-meaning ‘concerned citizens’” surrounding the September 30 shoplifting incident but emphasized that “shoplifting is not acceptable under any circumstance.”

“Unfortunately, shoplifting and its prevention at times leads to unintended consequences,” according to the letter. “Had the individual involved responded to numerous verbal demands to stop no further action would have been necessary. Instead, they decided to ignore those demands and continue their exit from the store and were forcibly restrained until law enforcement arrived. Wildberries chose not to press charges.”

Ricord added that Gottschalk has been asked to work from home for the time being “as he regroups from the barrage of unwarranted and at times vicious criticism.”
