Day One Comes to a Klose

Photo: AG

Well, 6:32 p.m., the official Day One course closing time, has come and gone. Five or so sculptures — including the aforementioned Kinetic Dragonfly — remain unaccounted for. None of those sculptures therefore qualify to win ACE awards.

Will Funguy finally secure ACE honors? Will any of this year’s crop of sculptures end up at the bottom of Humboldt Bay during Sunday’s water crossing? Will Ken Biedleman need to tinkle again? Tune in tomorrow for Day Two of LoCO and KHUM’s 2016 Kinetic Koverage. Glory, glory.

To close out today, check out the video below, courtesy Chad Johnson, chroncling the sights and sounds found this morning during the Kinetic Kick-off at the Arcata Plaza. Glory, glory. —AG

2016 Atomic Funguys | Saturday, 5:25 p.m.

IS THIS FUNGUY'S YEAR?!?

Your Lost Coast Outpost caught up with the Atomic Funguys right before the day one finish line in front of ye olde Carson Mansion and, holy shit, their ACE Award is still intact.

Is this happening?! Break out the psilocybin!

2016 Kinetic Kootie | Saturday, 5:20 p.m.

Hmm! How Did June Get Here So Fast?

Photo: AG

Huh. You know, we could have sworn that we didn’t see the Kinetic Kootie out in the sand today. But when your Lost Coast Outpost arrived at Halverson Park this afternoon, by golly, there she was!

Was it “kreative kourse manipulation?” Not so says team captain June Moxon in the clip below! What a racer! —AG

OH, UPDATE: Did we mention that the Kinetic Kootie totally, absolutely made their way through the sand today? You understood us when we said that earlier, right? In case you were out there trying to spread rumors otherwise, check out the supervisorial proof below, you ragamuffins.

Defending Champs ACE Dreams Alive

Can you say (or spell, for that matter) three-peat (is that right?)? We’ll find out Monday. In the meantime Tempus Fugitorium is still holding strong to their ACE.

2016 Kinetic Dragonfly | Saturday, 4:54 p.m.

Kinetic Dragonfly Slogs Toward an Ace Finish

Photo: AG

Pulling up the rear! On LoCO’s long walk back to the Manila Community Center, we ran into The Kinetic Dragonfly, the very, very last sculpture slogging it out in the sand.

As team rep Michelle Estabrook told us, spirits remain high since their ACE is still intact, but now it’s a race with the sun to make it to the finish line before the course closes. Oh my! —AG

2016 SHARK!!! | Saturday, 4:18 p.m.

Ken Takes a Piss

When nature calls, Shark captain and Kinetic legend Ken Biedleman listens as your Lost Coast Outpost discovered in this exclusive in-sculpture interview.

2016 Planet Nine | Saturday, 4:06 p.m.

You Dirty Rat!

Photo: AG

The Manila Dunes are arguably the most difficult part of the course, sure, but it was rodent problems that almost sidelined Planet Nine earlier this fine kinetic day.

Team Captain Jennifer Weiss explains in the clip below. —AG
