Black Humboldt Kicks Off Four-Day Juneteenth Celebration
###
This year’s Juneteenth celebration is shaping up to be the biggest Humboldt has ever seen, spanning four days and multiple locations across Arcata and Eureka. The event, hosted by Black Humboldt, will feature a barbecue, carnival, karaoke, open mic night and, of course, the big Juneteenth Day Festival at Halvorsen Park on Saturday, June 22.
The celebration of Juneteenth — otherwise known as “Freedom Day” or “Emancipation Day” — commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned that the Civil War had ended and they were free. The day became a nationally recognized holiday in 2021.
In the interview below, KSLG’s Sabina chats with Lexxi from Black Humboldt about the impact of Juneteenth festivities in our small community. Keep scrolling for more information about this year’s Juneteenth celebration.
