A Squirrel Nut Zipper Finds Time For Humboldt Tonight (VIDEO)
Well, look at this last minute addition, would ya? Previously here on the Lowdown, we’ve discussed the musical benefits of Humboldt being a nice pit stop between San Francisco and Portland. But on this particular Monday night, it’s a few nights with nothing to do between dates in Reno and Seattle that landed us an impromptu evening at The Palm Lounge with the founder of Squirrel Nut Zippers. Thank Jah for schedule holes.
Unlike the swing revival of SNZ, guitarist Jimbo Mathus and his current band The Tri-State Coalition peddle more of a country/southern rock sound. After the Zippers disbanded in 2000, Mathus worked and toured with Buddy Guy for a few years before returning to the south where he formed his current band — The Tri-State Coalition released their debut album in 2011 and is currently supporting their latest collection Dark Night of the Soul. Get a sampling of their sound in the clip below.
