Humboldt Folklife Festival Kicks Off Eight Days of Music Tonight

For the next eight days, the fine folks of the Humboldt Folklife Society would once again like to cram as much local music into your ears as you’ll let them during their annual Humboldt Folklife Festival. So’s you don’t get lost, let the Lowdown provide you a brief synopsis of what to expect each night:

  • Saturday, July 11 - Festival Kickoff at Mad River Brewery: Your eight days of music begin in low-key, informal fashion out Taylor Way with some beer, some sunshine and stringed-out festival veterans Clean Livin’ and Spindrifters.
  • Sunday, July 12 - Annie and Mary Day at Perigot Park, noon-6 p.m.: Since 1967, the Blue Lake Chamber o’ Commerce has held this annual event — which later became part of Folklife Festival proceedings — to celebrate the historic Arcata Mad River Rail Line. The “Annie” and “Mary” in question were Annie Carroll and Mary Buckley, railroad company-employed bookkeepers from the turn of last century. Apparently, they made an impression. Yes, there’s a parade, vendor booths and grub options. But as with all the week’s gatherings, the main event is the music. This year’s lineup features Timber Ridge Boys (noon), Lemon Lemon Cherry (1:15 p.m.), LaPatinas (2:30 p.m.) and The Delta Nationals (3:45 p.m.).
  • Monday, July 13 - Songwriters Night in Dell’Arte’s Carlo Theatre, 7:30 p.m.: The sounds move indoors for the next two nights beginning with Monday’s songwriter-heavy evening, an intimate show allowing some of Humboldt’s most adept musical wordsmiths the opportunity to play a few tunes while discussing the unique nuts and bolts they put into their songs. This year features Jan Bramlett, Dominic Romano, Sam Whitlach and Paul Turner.
  • Tuesday, July 14 - Jazz Night in Dell’Arte’s Carlo Theatre, 7:30 p.m.: The festival veers slightly off spiritual course for Jazz Night, a showcase for some of Humboldt’s most musically virtuosic performers. This year’s fingers to watch belong to The Low Notes, Business Casual and Con Ritmo.
  • Wednesday, July 15 - Under the Big Top in the Big Hammer Tent, 6 p.m.: Business picks up midweek as the festival moves into Dell’Arte’s circus-y tent for the most raucous of the week’s events.  Absynth Quintet, Vanishing Pints and Bayou Swamis provide the aural energy.
  • Thursday, July 16 - Under the Stars in Dell’Arte’s Amphitheater, 6 p.m.: Tickets for Thursday’s event may become hard to come by due to the presence of the beloved-but-rarely-heard headliners Huckleberry Flint, winners of many a “Humboldt’s Best Band.” Filling out the night will be local pickers Kenny Ray and the Mighty Rovers and Compost Mountain Boys.
  • Friday, July 17 - Festival Barn Dance at Arcata Vets Hall, 7:30 p.m.: May we interest you in a hoedown? The festival moves to Arcata for one night for its annual barn dance. Dosey Doe to the sounds of local party starters the Striped Pig Band and caller Lyndsey Battle. No partner? No experience? No problem.
  • Saturday, July 18 - Annual All-Day Festival at Dell’Arte, 11 a.m.: The main event. The festival goes out with a bang on Saturday filling much of downtown Blue Lake with a free day full of local music on two stages, plus food carts, vendor booths, workshops, sing-a-longs and more. Let’s just have a look at the line-up, shall we?:
