SATURDAY LOWDOWN: The Baduwa’t Festival is Back

This weekend, Dell’Arte International will celebrate 50 years in Humboldt County!

Just a few months ago, the staff at Dell’Arte weren’t sure if the theater company and school would even make it to it’s 50th anniversary. In October of last year, Dell’Arte’s leadership made the difficult decision to lay off nearly all staff due to critical funding issues. Dell’Arte’s board launched a crowdfunding campaign to keep the struggling theater afloat, and in just three months the organization surpassed its $125,000 goal. A celebration is certainly in order!

Dell’Arte will kick off the theater company’s 34th annual Baduwa’t Festival (formerly known as the Mad River Festival) with The Poor of New York, its first mainstage outdoor show since 2019. The production, adapted by Michael Fields, one of Dell’Arte’s founding members, is a comical take on the classic American melodrama. This is the play’s opening weekend in Dell’Arte’s Carlo Theatre (details in your Lowdown listings below). It continues through the beginning of July.

The Baduwa’t Festival will continue through the summer with additional Dell’Arte performances, panel discussions, shadow puppetry and, of course, the Humboldt FolkLife Festival.

Check out the event listing below for more information about tonight’s production. A complete schedule of events for the 2024 Baduwa’t Festival can be found here. And scroll your Saturday Lowdown below for more local happenings.
