LOWDOWN: All Hail Rural Rock & Roll!

We were young once. We were young and dumb, smoking, drinking 40s of Olde English and hanging out in disreputable places. We looked fantastic.

The soundtrack to our wayward youth? See, once upon a time, kids, we had bands. Bands like Dragged By Horses. Eureka Garbage Company. The Buffy Swayze. The Hitch. Monster Women. Que La Chinga. The Smashed Glass. Etc., etc.

These bands were a big deal!

And this weekend you kids get to learn all about it, because it’s the 20th anniversary of “Rural Rock & Roll,” a great film by the great Humboldt expat filmmaker Jensen Rufe! There’s a whole weekend of events planned to mark the occasion, and we’re gonna drag you out to it so you can learn how much cooler we were than you are now.

First up: Tonight, at the Eureka Theater: ZOMBIES OF EUREKA, a Rural Rock and Roll-adjacent project by local filmmaker Jon Olsen. Back in the day Olsen decided he’d make a bunch of music videos for all our favorite local bands, and for some reason he made them all zombie-themed. You can see them plus a special “making-of” video up on the big screen tonight. Only five bucks!

Tomorrow: Forget about tomorrow, because it’s sold out. No tickets left! You can stay at home and cry while all the cool kids rock to Buffy Swayze and Clean Girl & the Dirty Dishes at Savage Henry. Hosted by the great low-fi rapper JPG! Where’s that guy been?

Saturday night: The main event! The Eureka Theater again! They’re rolling out the red carpet for a RURAL ROCK & ROLL SCREENING and a Q&A with the director. And hold onto your hats, because after this they’re wheeling The Hitch and The Smashed Glass onto the stage for a live performance of their respective songs! Holy moly! All this for only ten dollars!

Sunday night: THE AFTERPARTY! The Lowlights and The Ian Fays will be playing Richard’s Goat in Arcata. Will the Fays bring their tinkly toy pianos? Only one way to find out! And there’ll be also a bunch of Rufe video showing at this thing at well. And more JPG! Click the link for details.

Once you’ve attended all these events, you will receive a diploma and we won’t bother you about it anymore, at least for a couple of months. Get back to your TikToks or whatever.
