Indigenous Peoples’ Day Lowdown
Man oh man, Facebook is oddly unified today! It seems that roughly 500 give-or-take years ago some Italian guy got lost on the way to India and was so embarrassed about his eff up that an entire continent had to deal with his genocide. That’s no good.
Thus, on this Columbus Day Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we remember that Christopher Columbus is a really weird dude to celebrate (i.e. he sux) and we should instead show some reverence to the groups he and those who followed in his white footsteps decimated.
One small way you could do that is by heading to The Miniplex at Richard’s Goat where Monday they are screening Alcatraz is Not an Island. A synopsis followed by an excerpt:
In 1969 a small group of Native student, activists and other urban Natives begin to occupy Alcatraz Island in the San Fransico Bay, reclaiming “Indian Land” for the first time since the 1880s. A monumental feat in ongoing struggle for the self-determination of Indigenous Peoples. This is their story.
