Tuesday’s Lowdown: The Day the Music Lived!

On this date in 1959, rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper died in a plane crash in Iowa, an event famously dubbed “The Day the Music Died.” 56 years later, despite it being a Tuesday, Humboldt County has a pretty good night of music skedded if you don’t mind skipping NCIS. So, you see, the world has a way of balancing things out. 

  • Adrian Legg is one of those guitar players that makes people whose guitars, more often than not, sit in the corner want to lop off their fingers with an axe. See evidence in the far left clip below, before he hits The Sanctuary tonight.
  • In 2013, at the age of 24, Chilaen-born saxophonist Melissa Aldana was the first female instrumentalist to take first place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. See what her lungs are capable of in the center clip below before her Redwood Jazz Alliance-sponsored show at the Arcata Playhouse.
  • Fear not. Humbrews won’t let you go too long without a jam band fix. The latest example of their commitment to extended versions comes in the form Los Angeles’ own livetronica funk noodlers Particle. The clip at right below was snagged at one of their sound checks. Heh.
