TUESDAY LOWDOWN: Carl Sandburg, Unwitting Jazz Lyricist; Big Funk in Arcata
Your overachieving Humboldt Tuesday features the big Shaggy show at the Mateel Community Center — you likely know as much about him as you need to — plus a palatable pair of NoHum highlights, one best suited for your ears, the other geared more toward your butt:
- The Redwood Jazz Alliance kicks off its 12th season at HSU’s Kate Buchanan Room with jazz drummer Matt Wilson’s latest project/band Honey and Salt. The group takes its name from a Carl Sandburg poem — Wilson grew up near the Sandburg’s hometown and cites the poet as an influence — and their performance, combining jazz, blues and gospel with spoken word elements, will attempt to give some loose musical form to a number of Sandburg’s works. Have a taste of Honey and Salt in the clip on the left below or read more here.
- Maybe Tuesday is your Friday (or maybe your dance-all-night proclivities don’t confine your energetic ass to weekends) and it’s booty-motivating funk you crave. Humboldt Brews offers medicine in the form of Brooklyn-based 9-piece “powerfunk” sound army Turkuaz. Test drive their rhythms and determine if they are worth having a less-productive Wednesday in the video on the right, below.
