(UPDATE) Here is What Humboldt is Doing on 4/20
While it’s a far cry from Humboldt’s free-spirited weedy wingdings of yesteryear, some lads and ladies are gonna try and have themselves some 420 fun today. So there:
- LoCO previously reported that Redwood Park would finally again be open to 420 revelers albeit under the label “Inaugural Picnic and Gathering.” You can thank the Humboldt Center for Constitutional Rights for this freedom. While the HCCR release on the event doesn’t say a lot about what will be happening there, it does mention what will not be occurring: “The permit limits the free speech celebration to the picnic area and specifies that within the permitted area there will be no smoking or alcohol. It specifically prohibits HumRights from using the stage or amplified sound.” Obey.
- Unofficial gatherings have sprung up to try and spread 420 cheer. Most notably, there will be DJs and barbecue at Pump 1 Station (UPDATE: Mad River Beach; pumpstation gates were locked). The event’s Facebook page advises attendees to “bring all you’re toy’s and friends. Bring things to Bar B Q. Please Car Pool. n keep the place clean.” Elsewhere, LoCO was just tipped off to an impromptu block party near HSU. Be a respectful guest at other folks’ shindigs.
- Not necessarily related to the “holiday” are tonight’s music offerings, highlighted by the HumBrews double bill of Americana band Hot Buttered Rum (see clip below) and local faves Absynth Quintet. If you are Eureka tied, an indie rock quadruple band-ing is taking place at The Siren’s Song Tavern. Music, brah.
- Other things that seem doable today: Looking at birds, snickering at dick jokes, bowling poorly.
- Finally, LoCO is feeling prophetic: why do we just know that the Ocean Grove’s weekly Dancehall Monday is going to be especially festive tonight? WHY? Y’all kinda feel that, right? Go with Jah.
