This Afternoon is Your Chance to Check Out a Deep-Water Robot Submarine

Would you or your preteen like to meet a robot submarine?

If so, this afternoon, right after school gets out, you need to hightail it to the Bonnie Gool Dock (near the Adorni Center) for a tour of the research vessel Miss Linda and her sidekick, the remotely operated vehicle Beagle, which are on a mission to explore the underwater depths in the marine protected areas off our coast.

Tonight’s tour – and indeed, the entire operation; boat, robot, etc. – is sponsored by Marine Applied Research & Exploration, a Bay Area nonprofit dedicated to “using science-based marine conservation efforts to help protect and restore the ocean’s invaluable, yet threatened resources.” One of the organization’s current missions is to explore California’s Marine Protected Areas in order to gauge, via the Beagle robot, what sort of critters live in the deep, largely unexplored depths.

The North Coast is the last of the state’s MPA regions the Miss Linda has hit. It hits Eureka today in the middle of a swing southward from Del Norte County, and its crew has been blogging the journey so far, with entries and cool robot-taken underwater snapshots from Point St. George and Reading Rock. After today’s event, the crew will head south to document the Mattole Canyon.

Tours of the ship are from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at the Bonnie Gool dock, with an open house to follow at the local MARE office: 321 Third Street, Eureka. There’ll be wine and cheese at the afterparty, as well a selection of the mindblowing wonders of the deep the Beagle has snapped on its various journeys. More information here.
