Some interest in this case has focused on the timeliness of emergency response. For what it’s worth, the Outpost has included unedited scanner audio recorded during the event for anyone who may desire to take a listen. The audio below picks up at approximately 3:03 a.m. and runs for about half an hour.

(NOTE: The software used to capture this audio includes somewhere between 30 seconds to a minute of delay, meaning this audio was not time-stamped precisely. The times we’ve included here attempt to take that delay into account, still, they should be considered educated guesses. The space between communications is accurate in relation to itself, though.)

We’ve annotated notable bits from the audio below:

3:03 a.m.: APD officer asks that “multiple units respond” because there are “about 100 people” at the scene of a “415 physical,” code for some sort of physical altercation. Request, also, that UPD be summoned.

3:04 a.m.: A dispatcher states that an additional RP (reporting party) said that two people have been stabbed.

3:06 a.m.: A dispatcher tells medical units “staging required” in front of 1120 Spear Avenue. Soon after the dispatcher says, “Man down, unknown details, possibly violence involved, per CHP report stated possible stabbing.”

3:07 a.m.: Code 3.

3:09 a.m.: Dispatcher: “From Arcata PD: CPR is in progress.” Officer at scene asks for additional units. 

3:10 a.m.: Dispatcher: “Scene is secure, per Arcata PD, for one patient, possible stabbing, with CPR in progress.  

3:11 a.m.: A dispatcher stated that UPD has no additional units to send to the scene. An officer asks that the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office or California Highway Patrol.

3:12 a.m.: Dispatcher says CHP unit is en route from Samoa. 

3:13 a.m.: An officer relays the name of an identified witness. 

3:14 a.m.: Some communication obscured by background noise declaring there to be an “aggressive crowd” with “victims crying.” 

3:15 a.m.: Sheriff’s Office deputies said to be en route.

3:16 a.m.: Additional CHP units en route.

3:19 a.m.: Additional HCSO units en route.

3:20 a.m.: “There is a large group of angry individuals.”

3:21 a.m.: Officers dispatched to Mad River Community Hospital to provide security.

3:23 a.m.: Code reduced. 

3:24 a.m.: A dispatcher runs Kyle Zoellner’s name after he is detained. 

3:28 a.m.: Additional units en route to Mad River Community Hospital.    

3:33 a.m.: “Can you bring your camera? I think I found the weapon.”
