(Left to right: 2013 Rutabaga Queen candidates Johnny BerryPicker, Lady Luck and Naughty ‘n’ Nice)

The high season on the Kinetic Kalendar gets underway on Saturday with the annual Rutabaga Ball taking place at Arcata’s Portuguese Hall. With the surprise, last-minute addition of the controversial Johnny BerryPicker to the candidate’s list emotions should run high. BerryPicker will face steep competition from Lady Luck — who the Lowdown is just gonna come out and call the favorite — and Naughty ‘n’ Nice.

The winner of tonight’s odd festivities goes on to be the 2013 Rutabaga Queen who will oversee next weekend’s Kinetic Grand Championship. Big responsibility.

If all that is too nerdy for you, there’s other options. Arcata will be hoppin’ tonight with the annual Black and White Ball at the Arcata Theatre Lounge, Missing Link Record’s Soul Night 19 at HumBrews, and Quijeremá at the Arcata Playhouse. Go forth, HumCo. Get down.
