(VIDEO) ‘Orick’ The Documentary is Required Viewing for Humboldt Residents
It’s a more-vibrant-than-average Humboldt Thursday for the non-sofa set. Outdoor lovers, saddened by our recent loss of daylight hours can gather at the Arcata Theatre Lounge for the monthly Ocean Night film screening. Up at The Sanctuary, local poet Jerry Martien and friends have put together an evening of musically enhanced spoken word pieces highlighting our changing climates. Also in the poetry vein, A Reason to Listen is celebrating 10 slamming years at The Siren’s Song Tavern.
There is a richness of options for acoustic music cravers. Quick roll call: Kingfoot at Redwood Curtain Brewery, Blake Ritter at Mad River Brewery and Urban Pioneers at the Logger Bar.
Also, tonight at the Eureka High School Lecture Hall, you can catch the latest installment of Local Filmmakers Night. This time out they’ll be featuring a group of senior projects produced by HSU film students over the years. No, no! Some of these films are quite good! For example, we were pleased to find one of the selections, “Orick” by Jensen Rufe, on YouTube. In the short documentary, which is more an historical document at this point, the filmmakers spent some time in Humboldt’s burl capital hanging out with the colorful, friendly, sometimes homophobic locals at the local bar, on the beach and during the annual Orick Rodeo. Preview the beauty in the clip below … and smile!
