Friday Lowdown: Where the Bands Are

(L to R: Fire Pony, Monophonics, Ryan Bisio)

Future generations will surely judge us by how we spend our Friday nights. Don’t blow this. While Blue Lake Casino’s annual Burlesque Showcase kicks off with its Miss Humboldt Burlesque Competition tonight, sure, this Humboldt Friday’s theme seems to be live music. A pinch of aural highlights:

  • Do you funkin’ love the environment? EPIC hosts their annual Fall Celebration gala fundraiser tonight at the Mateel Community Center. Yes, you’ll get a fine meal out of the deal, but the main attraction is blazing Bay Area funk/soul army Monophonics. Sample their horns in the center clip below.
  • Have you always wanted your enthusiastic “woo” to live on into eternity? Singer/songwriter and Arcata High School basketball coach Ryan Bisio is using his appearance at the Arcata Playhouse tonight as an opportunity to record a live album. This is your chance! Check out his stuff in the clip below on the right.
  • Been enjoying KWPT’s Classic Cover Contest? While the live finale for this year’s competition is still two weeks away, you can throw a saddle on former champions Fire Pony who play a set — covers and originals — tonight at The Siren’s Song Tavern. Check them out below on the left.

More ear joy in your Lowdown listings farther down. —Andrew Goff
