WEDNESDAY LOWDOWN: Jamaican Reggae v. Chinese Acrobatics

Wednesday night’s most high-profile shows offer a contrast in cultures, for sure.

In this corner, witness “daring feats of athletic discipline and grace, brilliant costumes, music and movement both ancient and modern.” Yes, the Golden Dragon Acrobats (video below on the left) from China’s Hebei Province will make their near-annual pilgrimage to HSU’s Van Duzer Theatre Wednesday night. Remember to breathe.

Meanwhile, down at the Mateel Community Center, a more chill scene will transpire. One of the best known acts in Jamaica, Israel Vibration (video below on the right) has been touring since the 1970s establishing themselves as one of the more vocal harmony-focused reggae groups in the world. The group’s core members — Lascelle “Wiss” Bulgin, Albert “Apple Gabriel” Craig, and Cecil “Skelly” Spence — met as children, all suffering from polio, in a rehabilitation clinic set up to help deal with a polio epidemic that affected Jamaica in the 1950s and ‘60s.

Details on those shows and other Humboldt Wednesday highlights in your Lowdown listings below. —AG
