SATURDAY LOWDOWN: The Humboldt Folklife Festival Starts Today; 8 Days of Music in Blue Lake

For the next eight days, Blue Lake will once again be the center of Humboldt’s musical universe during the Humboldt Folklife Society’s annual Folklife Festival. Now in its 39th year the event almost exclusively features local performers and is a great way to succinctly experience a huge swath of Humboldt’s musical talent. Your Lost Coast Outpost has compiled the entire list of performers and events below: 

  • Saturday: Festival Kick-Off Party - Gather in sunny Blue Lake at Mad River Brewery for a beer in and music by The Detours, Thursday Night Bluegrass and Kingfoot.
  • Sunday: Annie and Mary Day - Citywide festival highlighted with music by The Detours, Gatehouse Well, No Pardon, That Buckin’ String Band and Timber Ridge Boys.
  • Monday: Jazz Night- Veering from folk for a night to showcase the finest local jazz musicians: RLa Trio with Francis Vanek, The BluntSide Quintet and The Low Notes.
  • Tuesday: Songwriters’ Night - Features local songwriters taking turns playing their songs and explaining their craft. Featuring Leah Grams Johnson, Ryan Bisio, Scott William Perry and Rachel Beccaria. Hosted by Jan Bramlett.
  • Wednesday: Under the Stars - The festival moves outdoors into Dell’Arte’s amphitheater. Evening features Huckleberry Flint, Rogues’ Gallery and Kenny Ray and the Mighty Rovers.
  • Thursday: Bluegrass and Beyond - Fingers will fly during Thursday night’s festival proceedings with music by The Compost Mountain Boys, Jenny Scheinman and Clean Livin’.
  • Friday: Barn Dance - Annual hoedown at the Arcata Veteran’s Hall featuring toetap-worthy tunes from Striped Pig Band and caller Lyndsey Battle.
  • Saturday, July 15: All Day Free Festival - Full day of music on two stages, workshops, food, joy. Music by Absynth Quartet, The Trouble, Safari Boots, La Patina Band, Melanie Barnett, Vanishing Pints and more.
