Local Fisherman Will Travel State Gathering Input to Improve the Fishing Industry

Bob Borck on Humboldt Bay

On a crisp morning aboard the small fishing vessel Reel Steel, Bob Borck, a longtime local “crabber,” brims with love and knowledge of Humboldt Bay, pointing out various features and sharing some of his personal history. He motions toward the Pacific Ocean just past the entrance to Humboldt Bay.

“I caught my first salmon right over there when I was four,” Borck says.

Now a tad older, with countless fishing voyages under his belt, Borck is now setting out on a different mission: to help preserve and improve the United States’ fishing industry. Recruited by the Marine Fish Conservation Network, he will spend a significant chunk of this summer traveling California from port to port — from Crescent City to San Diego — gathering information and input from fishermen on how they think fishing could be better regulated.

The specific piece of legislation Borck hopes to influence is the Magnuson-Stevens Act, first passed in 1976, which has played a major role in helping regulate U.S. marine fisheries by promoting sustainable optimal yields. Since its inception Magnuson-Stevens has been reauthorized twice, in 1996 and 2006, and was due for another reauthorization last year. But due to the hectic political climate that never came. Borck aims to play a part in pushing for the reauthorization and hopes that his efforts will help fishermen with the evolving challenges they face.

“As the industry changes we need to keep up with what’s going on,” Borck says. For example, Borck would like to see legislation that assists young fisherman looking to buy their own boats.

After gathering opinions from fishermen up and down the state, Borck says he will compile the data and hand it off to MFCN who will then take it to legislators for consideration for the next Magnuson-Stevens Act reauthorization. Local commercial fisherman who’d like to help Borck on his quest and weigh-in on what they’d like to see in the the next reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Act have two opportunities to do so on Thursday, June 8:

  • Eureka: 10 a.m. at the Humboldt Fisherman’s Marketing Association office at 3 Commercial St.
  • Crescent City: 5 p.m. at the US Coast Guard auxiliary office at 100 Anchor Way.
