Wednesday Lowdown: Singer/Songwriter Battle and a Scary Ape Man

Sure, the brightest star in your Humboldt Wednesday sky is Swedish folkie Jose Gonzalez who will peddle his dreamy tunes on stage at the Van Duzer Theatre. Last year Gonzalez released his first solo album in almost eight years after a lengthy spell recording and touring with his band, Junip. During his solo hiatus, he also saw fit to provide much of the music for the Ben Stiller film “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.” Sample his a/v appeal in the YouTube clip below on the left.

If Van Duzer shows ain’t in your budget, Katie Crutchfield — known professionally as Waxahatchee — will bring her “confessional pop songs” to The Sanctuary. So honest were these ditties, Crutchfield was invited to be transparent as part of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts series. View her soul on the clip in the middle.

And if neither of those suit you, check out the trailer (on the right) to the Bela Lugosi horror ape movie they’re showing at the Arcata Theatre Lounge. Has it aged well? Get back to us.
