WEDNESDAY LOWDOWN: Renowned Drag King Makes Humboldt His Home This Week

2016 was a drag! Boo! (Are we still doing that?) Well, the beginning of your 2017 can also be a drag … but we’re talking a totally different kind of drag this time LOL. Yay! (Words.)

Specifically, drag king and illusionist Spikey Van Dykey — who was featured on The Huffington Post’s historical list of “28 Drag Kings You Should Know” — is in town this week, treating Humboldt to a drag residency of sorts. Here’s a quick rundown of events he’ll be making more glamorous:

  • WEDNESDAY: Spikey Van Dykey headlines the Gentleman’s Glitter show out at Blue Lake Casino featuring performances by local drag kings Tucker Noir, Hugh Johnson and others. Former Mr. Humboldt winner John McClurg hosts (which reminds us: Do you know anyone who you think should run in this year’s pageant? Get on that).
  • FRIDAY: Perhaps you’ve always wanted to gender bend yourself? Over at Synapsis Friday evening, Spikey will lead a drag workshop — mostly geared toward kings, but fabulousness translates across the spectrum. RSVP!
  • SATURDAY: Club Triangle will stage two events featuring Spikey at The Jam: First, at 7 p.m., it’s an all ages, “PG-13” show. Then, starting at 9 p.m., all hell breaks loose during CT’s annual MasQUEERade Ball, hosted by Fuscia Rae and featuring a slew of local performers. (Tip: You can score cheaper tickets for Saturday night’s gathering if you attend Wednesday night’s festivities.)

Now, in case you are still unclear on what in the blue blazes a drag king is, take few to get up close and personal with Spikey Van Dykey in the mini-documentary about him, below. —Andrew Goff
