TUESDAY LOWDOWN: Hot Licks from Madagascar, Guinea and Ghana, Oh My

Cheaper than a plane ticket across the Atlantic, CenterArts offers you an aural African journey up in the Van Duzer Theatre this Tuesday night. Your guides? The fretboard champions that make up the Juno Award-winning African Guitar Summit, a collection of African-Canadians offering up laid-back rhythms and melodies quality enough for Paul Simon to exploit. Touring with this version of the group — and hopefully inspiring HSU students to take a quick, Google-aided geography lesson — are Guinea’s Alpha YaYa Diallo, Madagascar’s Donne Roberts and Madagascar Slim, and drummer Kofi Ackah from Ghana. Get to YouTube-know the group in the clip above.

Real quick: In keeping with our policy of publicly appreciating event organizers who find non-boring ways to promote their thing, SCRAP Humboldt is gearing up for their fourth annual Rebel Craft Rumble, the Iron Chef-style crafting deathmatch which returns to the Arcata Playhouse on April 1. Rumble wranglers have announced the first competing team: the returning “Crafty Geriatrics!” Watch them fumble their social media debut below.
