Floyd Squires at the scene of one of his properties burning down | Photo: Andrew Goff

Local property owner Floyd Squires, who for years was a thorn in the side of the City of Eureka due to the often rundown condition of his rentals, has died at the age of 76.

According to the North Coast Journal, Squires’ death certificate notes he died of cardiac arrest that occurred in conjunction with a choking incident.

Now, LoCO could attempt to sum up Squires’ legacy for you in a few sentences, but we were thinking maybe just providing you with the list of all the times Squires and his various properties appeared on this site would do the trick. So here’s that:

RIP.

A local surfer is recovering after a very attack-like encounter with a shark at Centerville Beach on Sunday afternoon.

The Ferndale Volunteer Fire Department provided a few details on the incident on its Facebook page:

At 1530hrs (3:30pm) FVFD was dispatched to a report of a shark or seal bite at Centerville beach. Unit at scene did confirm that the bite was from a shark. The patient was transported by City Ambulance to a hospital.

To our recollection of our membership, we have not had an incident like this. This is a reminder that there are many hazards to be aware of when you are at the beach.

Please be safe.

Sharktober is here, people. If you’re wondering how the surfer is doing, you can get some idea of his status and demeanor from an Instagram post put up earlier today by The Shop, a surf store in Arcata. In it, the chewed-up patient can be seen flashing the shaka sign, which, in this instance, would suggest that he thinks he’s going to be fine.

You can view a sanitized version of the post below. But if you’re the kind of person who needs to see a chomped-on leg you can click over to The Shop’s page to see the shark’s gory handiwork. Ouchie.

Coast Guard Helicopter 6547 is off the Willow Creek incident and returning to the airport for fuel. It is unclear if they were successful in effecting a rescue, but it sounds like they are planning to return to the scene after refueling. (I have limited radio reception from this incident. Those with scanners in the more immediate area may be able to receive tactics and air-to-ground on CALCORD)

todd / 9:40 p.m.

Westbound HW 299 is blocked at mile marker 35, a few miles west of Willow Creek, while the Coast Guard aircraft works

todd / 8:54 p.m.

Willow Creek Cliff Rescue: HCSO has been on scene on Highway 299 in the area of mile marker 32-34 with a hiker or climber stuck partway up a rocky hillside. The situation at Fortuna High School seems to have settled somewhat. The school is now informing parents to come pick up their kids.

We are preparing to release students. Once your students building is cleared by law enforcement they will be released to go. Parents can come pick students on 12th but please remain in your cars. Busses will also be dropping students off on the regular route.

A trailer similar to Chase Inc.’s, which was stolen

Today in frustrating: Sometime over the weekend, someone stole Chase Inc.’s sole work trailer from their facility on West End Road in Arcata.

If you’re unfamiliar with the work Chase does here in Humboldt, for over 15 years they’ve been providing earnest jobs for community members with developmental disabilities. The company used the stolen trailer in question to trek around the county picking up paper documents in need of shredding. According the company’s co-founder Shannon Chase, the trailer is vital to the operation.

“This trailer is what they use in order to make money,” Chase writes as part of a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for a new trailer. “Without it, numerous individuals will now be without work until we can raise the funds to replace it. Due to the confidentiality of the material being picked up it, it absolutely has to be transported in a covered, locked trailer, not just in the back of a truck or other open trailer. Our program is one of the only ones on the north coast that has always paid the individuals minimum wage or better for working. We don’t believe in sub minimum wage just because they have a disability. So they will be losing out on a substantial paycheck.”

If you feel so moved, you can donate to Chase Inc.’s GoFundMe here.

Arguably the biggest cultural event to happen in Eureka in memory will occur in less than a month on Oct. 16 when native daughter Sara Bareilles returns to her hometown for a show at Halvorsen Park. The City of Eureka is thinking that at least some of the thousands who gather that day may get hungry, so they’re putting out the call for local food truck operators to rally for the cause.

If you believe you’ve got what it takes  to help fill the mouths of Sara’s ravenous fans, apply here.
